Alysia L. Johnson

Hailing from Dallas, Texas

Alysia was born and raised in Dallas, TX. She received her training from the Academy at Dallas Black Dance Theatre where she was a member of the junior ensemble and later went on to perform with both DBDT II and the main company as a guest.

With the help of her community

Alysia gathered additional training through summer programs at Joffrey Ballet, School of American Ballet, LINES Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary School of Dance, and was awarded the Texas Young Masters Award along with YoungArts Merit Award while in school at Booker T. Washington HSPVA under the direction of Lily Weiss.

Moving to New York

After graduating from BTWHSPVA, Alysia attended The Juilliard School in Manhattan and received her BFA in Dance. While in college, Alysia grew her interests in community engagement, choreography, and teaching. Juilliard awarded Alysia two grants that allowed her to build and direct her programs in her hometown of Dallas, TX. A highlight of her education is receiving Choreographic Honors, which allowed her work “Errand Boys” to be performed twice in Lincoln Center.

While in Manhattan

Alysia participated in the GLUCK Fellowship - building and performing in programs for adults, children and people with special needs. Here she continued to faciliate space for dance to take place in non-traditional spaces. During her time at Juilliard, Alysia also served in rebuilding and advising the Juilliard Black Student Union.

Upon graduating

Alysia joined America’s premiere contemporary dance company, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago where she performed works by Rena Butler, Kyle Abraham, Crystal Pite, Alejandro Cerrudo, Nacho Duato, Aszure Barton, Johan Inger, Ohad Naharin, Rennie Harris and many other choreographers over the course of her six years of dancing with the company.

With Continued dedication

Alysia became a leading community organizer and teaching artist in and beyond the Chicago community. Alysia went on to teach and choreograph at COMMON Conservatory, directed by Terry Marling, Chicago Movement Collective, The Rooted Space, Black Girls Dance, TDA Prep and regularly for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Fortunately, Alysia was blessed to serve as guest faculty for Jacob’s Pillow, and Princeton University where she taught Contemporary technique classes and taught repertoire by Kyle Abraham

Commercially

Alysia has been featured in music videos with artist such as Shelley FKA as Big Baby Dram, and AntARtik where she also served as the choreographer. Alysia has been a part of campaigns with Tory Burch, Adidas and Capezio.

Currently

Alysia is a member of Boom Crack Dance Company and AIM by Kyle Abraham and continues teaching throughout the United States both privately and regularly open classes.
